A pump is a device that moves liquids or gases through mechanical action, typically converted from electrical energy into hydraulic energy. Depending on the method they use to move fluid, pumps are classified into three major groups: direct lift, displacement, and gravity pumps.

Further classification of pumps depends on the way in which energy is imparted to the fluid. The most common methods are volumetric displacement, kinetic energy, and electromagnetic. Pumps operate via a reciprocating or rotary mechanism and consume energy to perform the mechanical work of moving the fluid.

They can have many power sources including manual operation, electricity, engines, or wind power. Pumps also come in many sizes, ranging from microscopic pumps used in medical applications to massive industrial pumps.

Pump efficiency is defined as the ratio of the power imparted on the fluid by the pump relative to the power supplied to drive the pump. The efficiency is not a fixed value for a given pump, but rather dependent on the operation.

In centrifugal pumps , efficiency increases with flow rate up to a certain point (peak efficiency) and subsequently declines as the flow rate continues to rise.

Pumps have a wide range of functions such as pumping water from wells, water & pond filtration, aeration, water-cooling, fuel-injection, pumping oil & natural gas, operating cooling towers, HVAC systems , and much more.
